An award recognising community-led support for people and families living with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) across East London and Essex

The CFDN has been named Disability Advocacy NPO of the Year (London & South East England, 2026/27) at the Prestige Awards, recognising the charity’s work supporting disabled people and their families through community, advocacy and inclusive services.

The award highlights organisations that demonstrate service excellence, meaningful impact and a strong commitment to the people they support. Judges consider not only what is delivered, but how organisations respond to individual needs and go beyond standard practice to support their communities.

For the CFDN, that work is rooted in a simple belief: disabled people and their families should not face life alone. Across East London and Essex, the charity provides social groups, events and advocacy support that help people build friendships, gain confidence and feel part of their community. This includes everything from weekly social activities and family events to one-to-one advocacy supporting families navigating complex systems and SEND challenges.

Behind this work is a growing need. Many families continue to face isolation, limited opportunities and barriers to accessing consistent support, particularly as individuals transition into adulthood. The CFDN’s work focuses on addressing that gap by creating spaces where people feel connected, supported and included.

Recognising a community effort

The award reflects the collective effort of volunteers, staff, trustees and supporters who sustain CFDN’s work across the region.

Volunteers remain at the heart of the charity, delivering activities, supporting members and creating welcoming environments where people can thrive. Alongside them, staff and trustees continue to strengthen the charity’s services, governance and long-term sustainability to meet increasing demand.

Most importantly, the recognition reflects the trust placed in the CFDN by its members and families — whose lived experiences shape and guide the charity’s work every day.

Our CEO, Dr Daniel Ruscoe, said:

“This award is a proud moment for our whole community as we approach our 70-year milestone. It reflects the dedication of our volunteers, the commitment of our staff and trustees, and the continued support of those who stand alongside us. Most importantly, it belongs to our members and families who place their trust in us every day. We are incredibly grateful to the judges at the Prestige Awards for recognising our work, but what matters most to us is the difference we see in people’s lives: the friendships formed, the confidence built, and the sense of belonging created. As we look ahead, we remain committed to growing our support and ensuring that no one in our community feels alone.”

Looking ahead

The award marks an important milestone and outstanding achievement for the charity, which hopes others will celebrate with them. However, the charity continues to recognise that the need for its work continues to grow.

The charity is focused on expanding its reach, building new relationships within communities, strengthening its advocacy services and increasing opportunities for disabled people and their families to connect and participate fully in community life.

As it approaches its 70th year, the CFDN remains committed to building inclusive, supportive communities where people feel valued, heard, and supported.
